This Psalm of David is probably the best known and loved of all the Psalms. It is widely known as the Shepherd Psalm, it is the delight of childhood and the consolation of old age. More books, articles, poems and hymns have been written on its theme than any other Psalm.
It has a message for both men and women of every generation; two illustrations are beautifully presented. The first, is a gentle Shepherd leading His sheep to rest and nourishment while protecting them from the dangers of the wilderness. The second picture is that of a gracious host generously providing an abundance of food and tender care for His guests.
The Psalm closes with a profession of absolute confidence in our Heavenly Father to lead His children lovely through this life and entertain them as His guest throughout the ceaseless ages of eternity.
What a fitting Psalm for study and our mediation as we come to the last day in 2022 and reach the threshold of a new year. So please join us on Prayers of Hope where we will focus on Jesus Christ our Good Shepherd who will never abandon us. He will carry us holding us close to His heart so that we can confidently enter 2023 and whatever the future brings in this life through to eternal life, we can be assured that with our Good Shepherd we shall never be in want for He will supply all our needs in exceeding abundance.
In the words of the Psalmist, Psalms 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. Hallelujah! Amen and Amen.
