Psalm 79 is classified as an elegy, which is a poem or song expressing sorrow. It is an expression of just that, as it describes the horrific scenes suffered by the inhabitants of Jerusalem under the invasion and captivity by the merciless Babylonian Army.
The Sanctuary was looted and destroyed by flames. The Citizens were massacred and their bodies were left to feed the wild animals and the vultures. In the midst of this devastation, the Psalmist cries out his prayer to God to rescue His people and carry out Divine retribution upon the offenders.
